President Eddie Fenech Adami and the High Commission of the Republic of South Africa to Malta, Lenin Shope paid tribute to Nelson R. Mandela during a celebration marking South Africa's National Day, known as Freedom Day.
This was the second time that the event was commemorated in Malta.
The High Commissioner recalled that after 27 years in jail under an apartheid regime "for having dared to fight for his people's freedom", Mr Mandela, the first President of the South African Republic who will be turning 90 in two months' time, was still able to have a warm heart and a generous smile. Mr Shope described Mr Mandela as the "beloved legend of our country".
Dr Fenech Adami said that Mr Mandela's pivotal role in achieving freedom and democracy for South Africa and the quiet diplomacy of President Thabo Mbeki have not only put the Rainbow Nation on the international scene but led it to become an exemplary guide for surrounding countries.
South Africa's economic growth and social development are not only an achievement for its people but an example of good governance for its neighbours to follow, the President added. The event, held at the Westin Dragonara Hotel, was also attended by the Honorary Consul of South Africa, Norman P. Mifsud, the South African community in Malta, ambassadors and high commissioners among others.
