Call to fight evils of homophobia and prejudice

Drachma, a Catholic group for gays, is calling on religious leaders and authorities to seriously consider the evils of homophobia and prejudice.

The group is also stressing the authorities' duty to take concrete steps to protect lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) people, both locally and internationally.

Drachma made the appeal as it prepared to celebrate International Day Against Homophobia with a special prayer meeting on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Millennium chapel, Paceville.

The group also called on LGBT people who are, or have been, victims of homophobia to attend and extended its invitation to their parents, family and friends.

"We would also like to invite in a particular manner parents, family and friends of LGBT who have committed suicide," Drachma said.

The group hopes the meeting will be a healing encounter with Jesus, which will bring reconciliation, forgiveness, hope and life to all those who experienced or are experiencing prejudice, violence or even death in some way or another.

On May 17, 1990, the General Assembly of the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. However, the fight for the recognition of equal rights for lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender people did not end there, the group recalled. In 75 countries being gay is still a crime and French activist Louis-Georges Tin, founder of the International Day Against Homophobia, is hoping to change this by pushing the United Nations to adopt a resolution calling for the decriminalisation of homosexuality worldwide.

No one has the right to sin. Thank God, the great majority of Maltese are practising Catholics and are convinced that no offence of God is a right.

For those who want to know more what the Catholic Church teaches on homosexuals can read at least paragraphs 2357 - 2359 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. One can easily download it on the internet.

To throw mud is childish. Those who threw mud on the Catholic Church in the past are buried and the Church is still thriving and will continue to be full of energy up to the end of time.

@Dr. John Zammit: With your idea of liberty, Mr. Zammit, we'd still be stuck in the ages of sticks and stones. Homosexuals have as much rights as any other human being, and being gay (or lesbian) doesn't make one special but neither does it make one ill. I've noticed this trend is becoming popular nowadays where homosexuals are fighting not only for rights that they deserve as human beings but also for extra rights.

The Alleanza Liberal-Demokratika Malta (ALDM) has already supported gay rights since its inception and will continue to support gay rights even in its electoral manifestos. In the coming European Parliament Election of June 2009 we will be even including the right of gay people to get married if they wish so. For more information go to www.freewebs.com/liberalalliance John Zammit has been already a candidate for the European Parliament election of 2004 and already backed gay rights in the past.

God created us male and female. God made marriage between one man and one woman. This is the only marriage that exists before God.

Every sexual act outside this type of marriage is sin and a grave sin that puts the perpetrator on the way to hell. This applies to all sexual acts that are not made the way God ordained.

Thus teaches the Catholic Church and her teaching on morality will never change.

Tendencies and temptations are not sins. If we succumb to them sin comes into play.

God told us that alone we sin, but with his grace we shall have the power to shun evil. Grace is enormous in its power. Let's pray God to give us this grace.
