Gonzi urges Labour to cooperate in government initiatives

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has appealed to the opposition to cooperate with the government and open a fresh chapter in the island's politics. He was speaking at the end of a meeting of the PN general council this morning..

Dr Gonzi augured that that Labour under a new leader would participate in the government's initiatives.

"I hope that the opposition's negative chapter is closed," he said, adding that the government's is willing to wait until the opposition completes the changes it is going through.

He said that it was for this reason that Parliament had been summoned on the last date possible after the elections. And although the Speaker's appointment has been criticised, the government was willing to wait for the opposition's final decision on the issue, he said.

The council confirmed Prime Minister Gonzi as leader and Tonio Borg as deputy leader.

@ Joe Vella.

I know. What you said is true. Iv'e been trying to convince other Labour supportes for the last 10 years at least but no-one would listen. Do you collect voting documents? If so i can give you mine from the last two elections.

Yes , every one knows that Dr Gonzi wasn't the leader of the PN at that time.
But please let me remind you that before Dr Gonzi entered in play as the leader , the PN had an experience in opposition and that between 97-98 when in opposition he was the general secretary an MP and the WHIP for the PN .

So Dr Gonzi can the MLP do the same as the PN did when in opposition??
Or as usual as it comes yo the MLP this is untidemocratic and negativ .
Please let us know so that history will be set for real !!!
Joe Vella (on 11/5/08)
@ Elfie Carbonaro

the MLP should co operate because for its' own interest. The PN Government will govern whether it has a one seat majority of one a 5 seat majority, Period.

The sooner the MLP will understand this the better for its' good.

The Labour Government of 1996/1998 had all the cooperation of the PN. The cooperation lasted until the arrogance of the MLP, which is still rampant, insisting on dragging EFA from his sick bed to parliament against his doctor's advice.

@ MartinSaliba

Alfred Sant in 1998 brought about his own political demise and Dom Mintoff gladly played along with him to his own detriment. Alfred Sant have no one to blame except his own stupidity.

The MLP should cooperate with the PN government cause for it's own interest. If the MLP want ot survive as an alternative political power it has to change drastically how it view politics. But I do not expect this to change after this weekend decision by the MLP delegates. Jason Micallef the cause of the MLP electoral losses still dictating how things should be run at the MLP.

Is Dr. Gonzi auguring for cooperation , or begging for it. His government is already trampling over both halves of the electorate. First there was the application for Malta to join the pfp. Whether this is a good thing or not i don't know, but what i do know is that he did it without the cooperation of the Labour opposition. Something else that he is going to do with which i totally do not agree is the removal of eco rebates on products that are to an extent or another beneficial to the environment. These are just two things , that we know of , that he has done without the cooperation of the opposition. What about the cooperation given to the labour goverment of 1998? Now someone will offer some kind of " bull " like that Gonzi wasn't leader of the opposition in 1998 and / or that discussions on both items mentioned above were not possible as parliament hadn't opened yet.

why should the mlp cooperate?is it because gonzi has malta at heart or because of his one sit majority.would you have asked the same if you had a 4 seat advantage.so please mr gonzi if you dont see it possible to run the goverment with what you have got dont be a beggar.now is the time to show everbody what stuff you are made off and if you fail dont blame it on the mlp.in your hands you have a situation that can wobble with a slight breeze.
Carmel Micallef (on 11/5/08)
Dr. Gonzi wasn't the leader of the opposition when PN was were in opposition. He is and remain a winner God Bless him
Ethelbert Schembri (on 11/5/08)
