On cloud nine after securing the Premier League title with three matches in advance, Valletta will be looking to extend their 20-match unbeaten run and enhance the festive mood in their clan when they take on Sliema Wanderers this evening at 5.
As the new champions of Maltese football, Valletta are perceived as favourites to emerge on top today but a stern challenge awaits them as Sliema, themselves on a roll after three consecutive victories, must win to keep their resurgent challenge for a UEFA Cup spot alive.
Their morale sky-high after a 5-3 success over Ħamrun Spartans strengthened their European bid, Sliema were on the receiving end of another psychological tonic on Thursday when Birkirkara conceded a last-gasp equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Floriana. This result has paved the way for Sliema to pull level on points with the Stripes if they inflict a defeat on the buoyant Citizens.
To do that, Sliema must shut out the party atmosphere at the National Stadium as the City fans are again expected to turn out in full force.
Stephen Azzopardi, the Sliema coach, must make at least two changes from Sunday's line-up against Ħamrun Spartans. Right-back Alex Muscat must serve a one-match suspension and Nigerian goalkeeper Murphy Akanji is out after straining an abdominal muscle.
Winger Matthew Bartolo and Brazilian midfielder Andre Rocha Da Silva have been struggling with groin injuries. Azzopardi was due to check on their condition during yesterday evening's training session.
Valletta coach Paul Zammit cannot name his strongest line-up today as Nigerian forward Frank Temile is ruled out by suspension.
Results so far: Valletta vs Sliema 1-2, 2-2, 2-0.
