Young passenger critical after car crashes into pole

A 20-year-old from Mosta is in critical condition after the car he was in was involved in a traffic accident in Mikielanġ Vassallo Street, Gżira at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

The police said the accident occurred when, for some reason, the 19-year-old driver lost control of his Ford Fiesta, crashed into an electricity pole and then overturned.

While the driver, who is also from Mosta, was able to get out of the car unassisted, the passenger had to be freed by members of the Civil Protection Department.

An ambulance took the two youths to Mater Dei Hospital where the passenger was found to be suffering from injuries of a grievous nature while the driver was only slightly injured.

The car was extensively damaged. The accident caused the road to be closed temporarily.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke is holding an inquiry.
