Aggressive dogs rounded up
The veterinary authorities yesterday seized nine dogs from the Swieqi, Ta' l-Ibraġ and Pembroke area after residents complained of their aggressive behaviour.
Anthony Gruppetta, director general of the Veterinary Regulation, Fisheries Conservation and Control Division, confirmed that the dogs were indeed aggressive.
The residents had called for action to be taken against a pack of strays that had been roaming the area, sometimes attacking cats and other dogs, as reported in yesterday's The Times.
The dogs were traced back to an illegal sanctuary situated in Pembroke, Dr Gruppetta explained. There, dogs were climbing the fences and passing through holes in it. Other strays from the whereabouts must have joined the pack.
The dogs, which are now being housed at the division's premises in Luqa, are in good condition.
Meanwhile, the authorities are concerned about those that never made it out of the compound. But someone must have been trying to take care of them as food and water were found on the premises.
SPCA personnel scouted the area in the morning. The police's ALE section and government representatives later joined the team and located the sanctuary in the afternoon.
The search will continue in the coming days.

Shame on you, Ms Mifsud, for suggesting such a thing as 'humanely putting to sleep'. It is a self-contradiction. You cannot put anyone or anything 'humanely put to sleep'. I am the proud 'owner' of two cats and these cats would NEVER be mauled by anything because I don't keep them outside. People who keep their pets outside are simply asking for it! If you keep your pet outside, that pet is not yours at all!!!!!!
It is no fault of the dogs to harm cats or other animals, especially considering how they were reared, and in what conditions they are made to 'live'.
I repeat, shame on you! A thousand times! That's animal welfare for you!!!!!!!!! Imissek tisthi!

Shame on the government. When are they going to take true action to help those people who care for these dogs. It is the usual situation,promising action to helpthem to no effect. As everyone knows the present government wants to compensate th e poor MPS who did not make it again to the Parliament. Come on pls use our tax money on worthwile projects like a proper dog sanctuary funded by the government itself

On the contrary Mr. Farrugia. I certainly hope that they are humanely put to sleep. I was at the vet's clinic just this morning and a lady brought in her cat which had been mauled by these dogs. Would you reason in the same way if it had been YOUR pet?

I sincerely hope that the dogs in question will not end up at the meat factory, so to speak!
