Putin pledges to curb inflation

Vladimir Putin, taking over as Russia's Prime Minister, pledged yesterday to cut Russia's growing inflation rate to single digits within a few years and said the size of the economy would soon surpass Britain's.

Mr Putin said in a speech to Parliament focusing on the economy that a major priority will be measures to fight inflation and that he wanted to achieve "single-digit inflation within a few years".
