Stray dogs creating 'an atmosphere of terror' in Swieqi

Residents in Swieqi phoned The Times offices yesterday evening complaining about a number of stray dogs in the area, which according to one resident were "creating a terrifying atmosphere". Residents said that they have reported the matter to the St Julians police station.

When contacted by The Times, the police, while confirming the reports, said they had no means by which they could handle the situation.

Residents alleged that the dogs were butchering cats in the area and were creating an "atmosphere of terror" to both children and mothers with pushchairs. Another resident said that at one time he saw no fewer than 17 strays.

Residents appealed to the competent authorities to remedy the situation before a serious incident occurs.

@ Dan Bowes: Shall I carry a baseball bat whenever I am at Swieqi or Paceville and meet a rowdy crowd of young people passing by? Especially during the so-called Halloween Fesitivities?
Carrying a baseball bat is no solution to the problem.

As a resident with my family, I too am concerned regarding these dogs. In fact, some of these dogs are not strays at all. They are owned by some irresponsible people that let their dog out the door to go do his business, albeit the owners are too lazy to walk the dog themselves and pick up after them. Can you imagine taking a walk with your dog on a leash and as you turn the corner you run into a pack of these animals? I have had this happen on numerous occasions and these dogs attack you and your dog. Someday it will be a small child, god forbid! My only suggestion until the local council or who ever is in authority gets off their duff is to carry a baseball bat. Then get arrested for carring a lethal weapon!
