The General Workers' Union has welcomed the instructions issued by Social Policy Minister John Dalli that whoever bids for government contracts should also include what conditions of work they are offering workers.

The union said it now believes that large private corporations should follow the government's example when they issue calls for tenders from private contractors.

The union said it was insisting on this point since it was unacceptable that many workers are exploited when the works are outsourced to contractors.

This was particularly evident with regard to security duties in the private sector, it claimed.

The union urged employees working in this sector to strengthen their voice by joining other security guards as members of the GWU.
