Choosing the leader

Some people credit the Labour delegates as well as all paid-up members with very poor judgement. Lino Spiteri thinks that the Nationalists have the power to sway the Labour voters in choosing the less promising leader to replace Alfred Sant. He wrote that as the PN has concluded that George Abela is the last man they would like to see as leader of the MLP they put another hurdle by seeming to stand up for him.

Alfred Mifsud speaks of a paradox suggesting that when people outside the party speak highly of a candidate for leadership, Labour, in defiance, will not choose him. However, Mr Mifsud states that he has been openly supporting Dr Abela's bid for leadership as he considers him as offering the best prospects for making Labour electable again. Mr Spiteri came up with a novel idea stating that the best ticket the MLP could have is Dr Abela as leader and Joseph Muscat as deputy leader and prospecting that the latter will take over some years from now.

If these two columnists from the left can see through the spin of the opponents and strongly support the candidate in question, why do they conclude that Labour will choose badly? Let the electors make an intelligent and conscientious choice for the good of the party and the country and may the best man win this heavy responsibility.
