The last time Swansea City played in the second grade of the English game, the 'old' Division One, was 24 years ago but they eventually lost their status at the end of season 1983-84. Swansea had just spent two seasons in the top flight under the guidance of Welsh coach John Toshack.
At present, Swansea have another smart man in charge at the Liberty Stadium, Spanish coach Roberto Martinez who ended his playing career in February of last year, just days before taking over his new team. The Swans moved to their new stadium in 2005 after leaving their home at Vetch Field and the fans are thrilled to see their team adopt Martinez's Spanish style, full of flair and verve.
Another man who played a big role in Swansea's rise to the Championship is forward Jason Scotland. Signed from St Johnstone, Scotland scored a total of 29 goals.
The other automatic promotion slot in League One has been taken by former European champions Nottingham Forest who finished 10 points behind Swansea.
League Two champions Milton Keynes Dons, who changed their name from Wimbledon after they left Plough Lane in 2004, are now playing at the National Hockey Stadium. Manager Paul Ince is proud to have led the Dons to new heights. Top clubs from the Championship and even the Premier League are willing to snap up Ince who had a successful career as a player at home and abroad.
Ince steered the Dons to a magical double this season as the side also lifted the Johnstone's Paint Trophy (the cup competition for sides in the lower divisions), defeating Grimsby 2-0 at Wembley.
The other two sides to gain a straight up to League One are Peterborough United and Hereford United.
Wrexham and Mansfield Town have lost their Football League status and slipped into the Conference League. They will be replaced by Aldershot Town and the other side that comes through the play-offs.
Welsh side Wrexham had been in the League since 1921 as original members of Division III North while Mansfield joined ten years later when they were elected to Division III South.
