Fraud charges

A man from Xemxija was yesterday remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to defrauding a man of over €2,239.37 (Lm1,000).

Anthony Bezzina pleaded not guilty to defrauding Donald Vella and misappropriating the money. He also pleaded not guilty to relapsing. Magistrate Anthony Vella heard that Mr Bezzina was previously granted bail on charges of fraud and has two suspended sentences on similar charges.

Taking Mr Bezzina's criminal record into consideration, the magistrate turned down the request for bail and ordered that he be remanded in custody.

Police Inspector Yvonne Farrugia prosecuted.
