I have been residing in Malta since January and have, like a recent letter writer, also experienced and seen evidence of overcharging on the buses, particularly on the express (tourist?) routes.
I would add that the standards of driving and paying due attention while behind the wheel could also be improved.
In fairness to the drivers, not all are guilty but the actions of a few tarnish the reputation of the majority.
I also have some sympathy on the issue of handing out change when the fares, certainly to an outsider, seem a little strange (while appreciating these are a result of the euro changeover).
It would help everybody if the fares could be adjusted in some way to make the job of handing out and payment of "odd" amounts a little easier.
The hike in fuel prices over the last year would certainly justify an increase in the moderate fares charged, say, 47c could become 50c, 54c could be raised to 60c, 112c to 115c. I am sure this would alleviate some of the problems for passengers and drivers alike.
