The role of engineering in sports

Engineers, students, sportsmen and sports administrators learnt more about the contribution of engineering to sports during a lecture by Nick Hamilton, from the Sports Engineering Research Group at Sheffield Hallam University.

Mr Hamilton used high speed video imagery and advanced computer modelling and simulation techniques to explain the dynamic behaviour of sports equipment such as tennis rackets, footballs and bicycles.

He showed how such knowledge is useful to improve both sports equipment and the performance of the athletes and players.

The lecture, which was part of the annual European lecture tour series, was organised by the Malta Group of Professional Engineering Institutions (MGPEI) together with the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK at San Ġorġ Corinthia, St Julians.
