End of energy subsidy scheme draws criticism

The Labour Party and Alternattiva, in quick succession, have criticised the government's decision to scrap the eco refunds scheme given to consumers who buy energy efficiency equipment. The scheme will end on May 31.

Labour environment spokesman Roderick Galdes said the government's decision had surprised the MLP since before the election the Prime Minister had projected himself as the defender of the environment.

He said Labour was against the government’s decision, which went against all policies of promoting the use of environmentally-friendly appliances. The government was giving a very bad example with regard to sustainability.

This decision confirmed the findings of a report, recently compiled by a think tank headed by Martin Scicluna which had said that: “In many major respects the environment has become worse”.

Carmel Cacopardo, AD’s spokesman on sustainable development, said the scheme had rewarded those who made wise choices for the environment by opting for equipment which used less power and polluted less.

AD said it was now waiting to see how the government intended to keep its environment promises.

A very big surprise and a bad decision. I thought the environment was going to be our number one priority. So this was effective just for a short period and that's it. Actions in favour of the environment should be ongoing. The environment is actually our health.
I'd rather not have the five free bulbs!!!

John Azzopardi is either living in space or does not know what he is saying....

I kindly invite him to mention one European Union country (for me the EU is a sign of quality lifestyle and a champion of consumer rights) which does not incentivise in one way or another consumers to buy energy saving products/services or to build energy saving homes....

...then we can slap adjectives and call our population a spoilt brat...

@ John Azzopardi - why treat tree-huggers with such disdain? If you are referring to the "green " vote, it was the vote which Lawrence Gonzi was desperately wooing before the election. Remember the country walks with the Ramblers? Remember the promises to reform MEPA? And the promise to rein the environmental deficit? What a difference a few short weeks make. Now we find GonziPN promising to legalise an illegal shantytown, a half-baked MEPA code of ethics and the removal of legislation which gave people an incentive to buy environmentally-goods. Gonzi stopped hugging those trees the day after the election

The energy subsidy scheme to be stopped!! wasn't this PROMISE 159 of the GonziPN manifesto? So is now Gonzi not keeping his promise? I question What else is there we have to face from this government. The 5 energy saving lamps could be next (by the way this promise was copied from an energy saving campaign by the British Government). Let's see what will happen to Free Healthcare!! I bet everyone remembers the documents revealed before the elections!! Most probably they weren't mudslingng after all.
Where are the ususal GonziPN lickers? Those who always shouted GonziPn always keeps his promises. Obviously this government doesn't have money to such environmentally riendly scheme. He has money only to keep his government in power by dishing out considerable amounts to the sidekicked ex-ministers. He also backs destruction of natural areas like Mistra and Ramla. Who cares, people voted for GonziPN again, now they have to eat their dictatorial crap.

John Azzopardi.
You might be in a financial position to aquire energy saving equipment without financial help. You might also be filthy rich and high energy prices do not affect you. Most subsides are designed to aid less fortunate people who might prefer to spend that 200 Euro or so on their children's education. Do you want everyone to start paying medical bills at public hospitals as well? One more thing. Does this mean that we will not be getting the 5 energy saving lamps as promised before the last elections?

I cannot understand how the government cannot find money to subsidise an eco-friendly scheme, but find money to increase his minister's wages and to give a bonus to the ministers who were kicked out of office by the electorate.

According to pledge 159 of the PN electoral manifesto pledge: "Rebates schemes on engergy efficient appliances will be sustained."

Is this the way of how we do modern politics?
John Azzopardi (4 days, 19 hours ago)
I think there is no greater incentive to use energy efficient equipment than the rocketing price of fuel! We are a nation of spoilt brats! Why should government pay subsidies to entice citizens to do the right thing by themselves after all! The pity of it all is that everyone is ready to jump onto the band wagon to make political mileage! Everyone has suddenly become a tree-hugger. Pull the other one...it plays jungle bells!
