Rights over a new life

There is something that does not convince me in what some are saying: That it is a woman's right to abort. And this for two reasons.

First, I do not think that a pregnant woman has the sole right over the creature in her womb. The male who brought about her pregnancy has a right to that creature as much as the female for it is the fruit of both their efforts.

Secondly, human life being the wellspring of a community, the community itself has a fundamental duty to renew itself with new life. Hence, a pregnant woman who aborts is depriving her community of the means of renewing itself.

As each member of a community has duties towards the good running and maintenance of that community, so also the pregnant woman has the duty of, at least, not destroying the new life that is growing within her, for, because of that new life, the whole community is being renewed.

If we start from the premise that man is a social animal, it must necessarily follow that abortion is to be condemned.

It is refreshing to see that so many people are upholding the value of human life.Ramon Casha, where do your misplaced arguments come from?  This is not about man being an endangered species!  I note you use the latin name and the word "species" as if man is nothing more than an animal!  I do not believe that animals have a conscience and I am sure that man can chose his behaviour and not leave everything to instinct - which is what you are suggesting!  Were that the situation the world would be even more chaotic than it already is!How can you say that the woman has sole rights over what happens in her womb?  This would suggest that all women who ever get pregnant, even by their own husbands, with consent, should be free to abort because the husband has no part in the procreation of the child!  How absolutely rediculous and, quite frankly, childish to say such a thing!  A woman may have that right but she also has an obligation!Christian Peregrin - yet again a misguided person who puts forward the view that only men oppose abortion.  That simply is not true!  And why should men not have a say?  It is the way we were made that men provide the sperm and women the egg and indeed the safe haven in which a child develops.  You cannot change this inviolable fact!

And what is the source of the misinformation you have for those rich or poor who will take certain causes of action? Just what is wrong with people seeking to defend human life?
I wonder if you would be happy to go back in time and be aborted?

Life has been cheapened too far and it is time we began to value human life. All this political correctness and trying to emulate other countries should take a back seat to the truth!

Well said, Mr Micallef Grimaud and Ms Kyle Pullicino. Probably additional comments to the letter will also include insults aimed at our politicians who voted "for life" at the Council of Europe last month. None of them was afraid to stand up and be counted - for which they deserve our thanks.
JeanPierre Aquilina (on 7/5/08)
Unfortunately some facets of society and the Council of Europe are misleading everyone to believe the unborn's right to life as inferior (or non-existent) to the mother's so called "right to abort". Worse still, the same facets and institutions want everyone to believe that abortion is morally correct. And they call this progress. At the same time, killing a newborn baby or a child is viewed as barbaric. The mind boggles.

i will not claim to have any idea of what a woman goes through during pregnancy (obviously).

However i would say that iI'm glad that I live in a country where society is not only intelligent enough but humane enough to realise that the unborn baby is alive and therefore has the right to CONTINUE to live.

God forbid if our society should descend into the sorry state of affairs which exists in the UK....Yesterday there was a debate on a English radio station, and some of the excuses given to justify abortion were actually disgusting:

I was in a bad relationship and didn't feel it was the right time to bring a child into the world.
I was just starting university and i felt it wouldn't be appropriate at this time
The father was an alcoholic and so I didn't think he would be a appropriate father

These 'people' believe that its a question of convenience, its not; its a question of life. If you are in a bad relationship then why would it be sexual in the first place? If you don't like someone surely you wouldn't be doing that.

If you were starting university then you really should be intelligent enough to know better; Surely she would have been intelligent enough to know the risks and the consequences of what she was doing.

The last excuse doesn't even merit an argument since its so ridiculous.

One could deinately draw a parallel with the 'throw away culture' which exists in the UK today...a quarter of all food is wasted in the UK while starvation grows like a cancer throughout the world. Unfortunately, now it has gone a step further and people regard life as expendable.

I truly hope Malta never reaches this stage.

As regards the woman having sole right over the foetus in her womb, actually it's about having sole right over the womb itself. Nobody but the woman has the right to decide how her womb is used. Not her husband, not the state, and certainly not a potential future human.

Secondly, as regards keeping up the population levels, last time I checked homosapiens was not an endangered species, and in fact overpopulation is more of an issue. Your ideas roughly translate to "women are meant for breeding".
Christian Peregin (on 7/5/08)
Yey! More men discussing how wrong abortion is!!

Now Daphne will rightly say how you should only speak once you can carry the baby for 4.5 months and give birth to half of it, and then you will say that she is the Devil and that it is because of 'baby-killers' like her and R. Gomperts that we should entrench this into the constitution because if discussions are allowed to continue abortion will soon be made obligatory, and then the community will suffer because no babies will be born and poor old men won't have kids to be proud of.....

I say we stop the discussion here. Rich teenagers who get pregnant unwillingly will keep going to Sicily or London to abort. Poor teenagers will keep taking cocktails of morning after pills, contraceptive pills and gin to get rid of the feotus. Some of the teenagers will die with complications, some will deform their babies instead of killing them, some will resort to suicide, some will succeed in aborting. But at least, Alfio and Kyle will think they've succeeded in saving the lives of unwanted feotuses.

The comments to this letter will be as follows:

"The embryo is not a person (?)"
"The embryo is a parasite."
"The woman is alive, but the embryo isn't."
"The embryo isn't a human being."
"The man should have made sure to control his zipper" (As someone mentioned sometime ago)
"The woman can think so is surely right. (That is after I've fed her the above lies)"
"The embryo can't speak so that means it can't live."
"You are a Catholic (or a member of another religion) so, somehow, that makes me automatically better than you."
"You've been brainwashed."
"You shouldn't even be talking with matters that concern women only."
"In case of rape then surely the woman can kill the developing human being (because somehow he/she deserves the death penalty for the above reasons)."

Well, I'll tell you Mr. Micallef Grimaud, that none of the above is true. What is true is that at conception, a new human being (yes, just like us) is formed. He/She appears very different to us, but he/she has all the necessary fundamental biological structures (that we all have) to be classified as an individual, distinct human being (all this at conception).

Calling it something different is pathetic and only serves to spread misinformation so that we can fill up the pockets of some "helpful" doctor when real help can be obtained for free (thanks to the fact that the Maltese are intelligent enough to realise what are the fundamental rights of both the woman and the not-yet-born human beings).

Love Life and Life will Love you back. :)
