Mediterranean folk music

The festival of Mediterranean folk music, Għanafest, will be held on May 16, 17 and 18.

Organised by the Maltese Council for Culture and the Arts, Għanafest will, as usual, be held at the Argotti Gardens in Floriana but this year it will have a wider dimension by including Mediterranean folk music.

This edition is being dedicated to the memory of Ġorġ Mifsud Chircop, who promoted folklore and, in particular, għana (folk singing) and who used to organise the festival. Artistic direction will be by Ruben Zahra, who specialises in traditional Maltese instruments. Apart from some of the most talented Maltese għannejja, a music group from Puglia in Italy and a Flamenco group from Spain will take part apart from Etnika, Walter Micallef and Nafra, offering a taste of Maltese music.

Tickets sell for €2 (Lm0.86) for one evening and €5 (Lm2.15) for the three nights.
