Gozo Channel ferries carried almost 80,000 passengers and 20,000 vehicles in the five days between April 30 and May 4, the Ministry for Gozo said.

Figures show an increase in both passenger and vehicle traffic − which the Ministry said was related to the Gozo 1234 culture and entertainment festival − when compared to May 16-20 last year in connection with the Lejlet Lapsi - Notte Gozitana festival.

Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono expressed satisfaction that things proceeded relatively smoothly notwithstanding the considerable volume of people and traffic.

The outstanding attendance and the general comments received during the weekend confirm that the government's initiatives, taken in conjunction with Gozitan stakeholders, have succeeded in attracting the attention of the domestic market.

This sector is seen as a crucial element in Gozo's tourism product since it generates much needed economical activity during the relatively lean months of the year.
