I welcome Minister Austin Gatt's intended stand against contractors who deliver sub-standard roadworks.
However, in my opinion, a hard stand needs also to be adopted in respect of the arrogance of the contractors and the ignorance of their workers and sub-contractors in ensuring that works-in-progress do not create avoidable damages to private property, inconvenience and health hazards for residents in the area where the works are being undertaken.
Furthermore, unnecessary stoppages in seeing a job through from beginning to end need to be investigated and monitored. Also, while the work is at a halt, now for the past two weeks, the residents have to be alert to avoid driving into the heavy mechanical equipment parked by the side of the road.
The issues mentioned above have been going on in a small area at Ta' Stronka/Tal-Kajjarum for at least the last two months.
Furthermore, my property has suffered damage as a result of the irresponsibility in the way the works are being carried out, and I am also suffering from unusually bad asthma attacks as a result of the clouds of dust resulting through passing traffic, in view that no intermediary remedial action has been taken by the contractor to avoid this situation. I would like to highlight that I had called the ADT many times and my calls remained unanswered. I then sent an e-mail on April 20 which was immediately acknowledged, however the situation has remained the same.
