Archaeology lecture

Keith Buhagiar, a mediaeval archaeologist, will lecture on Water Management Strategies in Late Mediaeval and Early Modern Malta at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall at 133 Melita Street, Valletta, offices of Din l-Art Ħelwa on Thursday at 6 p.m.

DLĦ said that during the past decade, field surveys have shown how farmers cultivating land in close proximity to Upper Coralline Limestone plateaus created networks of underground water galleries for the irrigation of terraced field systems.

Although difficult to date scientifically, comparative research suggests that this sophisticated water management system is similar to a technology used in the Roman and the Islamic world, and which was possibly introduced locally during the Muslim and post-Muslim period between the 11th and 13th centuries AD.

Admission is free of charge but donations to the heritage organisation's several restoration projects will be gladly accepted.
