To quote an extract from Richard Cachia Caruana's speech on January 30, 2003 on the results of the negotiations with the EU:
"On the other hand, there were areas where different Maltese groups held opposing views. Perhaps the best example of this concerns the hunting and trapping issue and the conflicting views of the hunters and environmentalists. It was clearly necessary for us to find a solution that was fair to both sides, as well as to the rest of the population. The result is that hunting and trapping will certainly not be abolished - contrary to what was said in certain quarters."
To quote Eddie Fenech Adami in a signed letter dated April 2003, (in translation): "Although restrictions exist on spring hunting in European Union countries, these restrictions will not apply in Malta with regard to turtle doves and quail, the two birds close to the heart of hunters in Malta and Gozo."
To quote Lawrence Gonzi in an e-mail sent to a fellow hunter in September 2007:
"Nixtieq inkun naf minn daħaq b'minn." (I would like to know who took who for a ride). Any further comment is superfluous.
