Romanians admit selling fake items
Six Romanians included a minor this afternoon admitted before Magistrate Doreen Clarke to having sold fake gold items in Malta.
The Romanians, including a minor, live in Malta but have no fixed address.
The minor was conditionally discharged while the others were given a five-month jail term suspended for three years.
Inspector Therese Sciberras prosecuted. Dr Renzo Porcella Flores was legal aid.
In another arraignment, Raymond Abela, 41 of Birkirkara was accused of having resisted the police, disobeyed police orders and threatened police constables in an incident in St Julians’ Road, Birkirkara, yesterday evening. He was also accused of unlawful possession of a knife.
He was handed down a six month jail term suspended for two years.
Insepctors Anton Taliana and Nicolai Sant prosecuted. Dr Robert Montalto was defence counsel.

My only input to this article and comments below is........ we can't deport illegal immigrants so how can you expect to deport the legal ones!!! Hail the EU

Mr Zammit, I believe that it is a criteria followed by every country in the EU. It does not even matther if you are an EU citizen or not. You have to follow the rules of obtaining a residence permit. I myself had to declare my income, health insurance, etc, to be able to live in Belgium. Even though I am a european citizen. No country want to end up paying a living salary to a foriegn person to live in its country, and I do not believe that as a right citizen of that country, would like to hear that your a part of your tax pay is spent in such a way!! However, yes we still end up with people who ends up doing as they wish outside their country. As we all say in Malta, "jekk ma taghdix mill-bieb, taghdi mit-tieqa!!"...

I was present at yesterday's court case, and it should be pointed out that the Romanians.
They had the means to live in Malta for a while at least and they did nto have a fixed address because they had already bought tickets to leave for Sicily, having arrived a few days previously.
Another thing which strikes me from the comments is that most of you if not all do not make a difference between Romanians and Roms. Roms are gypsies and they are a minority population in Romania, that is less than 5 %. But 5% out of 23 millions means more than 1 million. But it happens that their crimes reflect on the rest of 95%.

We must stamp out this fire before it spreads. We still have the chance to do it, but once it gets out of control, its next to impossible. The Italians are paying dearly for allowing such uninvited guests to settle in their country, thanks, perhaps, to their own lame legal system. Let us wake up before it is too late. One thing that amazes me is how these "people' manage to settle in Malta without the authorities realising their true intentions for coming here.

Some months ago, the UK wanted to send an Italian national back to Italy after he had served a prison sentence. He took the UK government to court, claiming that his right of freedom of movement as an EU citizen was being infringed.
He won the case, with costs!
Like it or not, that is also one aspect of being in the EU.

quite strange... a no eu citizen who decideas to retire here in Our country has to meet a strickt criteria about his financial revenus and a minimum expenditure per year besides thst he/she has to proof a decent habital place where to live - being rented or owned. Why make it so hard to people who are willing to come and live here in Malta while spending their money and not having any control on these migrants coming here without even enough revenue to support themselves?
Having myself a non EU partner i can assure anyone how hard it is to obtain a resdidence permit - besides that one has to proof that he/she is not a burdon on the state

Surely convicted criminals can still be deported - EU citizens or not! Otherwise there would be little hope for us if Eastern European low-life starts to flood into our country.
Perhaps someone with knowledge of EU legislation on this topic could enlighted us.

Romanians living in a foreign country with no address and earning money through crime! - sounds familiar. I have no problems with legitimate foreigners seeking a better life in Malta - after all i lived in Rome for a while, but it is actually this that gives me the knowledge on how these 'rom' really live and i definately would not stay in the same country with them. (obviously always talking solely about the ones who are commiting some sort of crime)

This is incredible. The number of Romanians 'living in Malta without a fixed address' seem to be getting bigger. How the hell are still here when its always being proved that they have not enough financial resources to live in Malta. It seems that we are heading for the same Italian Rom unhealing wound.
It seems, that the immigration section has deleted the word 'deportation' from their dictionaries!

I thoroughly agree with Mr Sammut about deporting these Romanians. If my memory serves me right, the court of laws has already tried to deport them to no avail. These people claim that they cannot be deported against their wish as they come from another EU member state and so they have the right of movement within the EU. How about that??!!!

Deport them to where? Romania joined the EU on 1 January 2007, they are citizens of Europe and therefore have a legal right to stay here, no?
