Falzon tours market, stresses consultation

Labour leadership hopeful Michael Falzon this morning toured the open market in Valletta as part of his leadership campaign.

He stopped to speak to a number of hawkers and people shopping at the market.

After his visit he pointed out that the strength of a political party depended on the number of people it was able to attract to its fold.

"I strongly believe in inclusivity," he said, adding that not only was more communication necessary within the party, but also externally.

"We need to be in a position to understand people, which is why consultation is important."

Dr Falzon would not be roped in to comment on the proposal to allow party members and not just delegates to vote in next month's election for the party leader.

A decision on the land mark proposal is expected to be taken on Friday during an extraordinary general conference.

Dr Falzon this morning also watched the scouts' annual parade and congratulated the movement for its service for Malta's young.

Open discussions, open debates, open criticism, the spirit of competition.....Labour never had it so good,Malta had never before seen this kind of democracy where party matters previously considered sensitive are being debated in the streets and the media. A real good feel of fresh air. Hope the PN will follow this new way of doing politics. Well done comrades keep it up.

I think MLP is showing a great deal of maturity and democracy within its folds. All candidates can promote their thoughts without hinderance... and yes there is a few hiccups... but overall it is a truely democratic contest. Hopefully the best wil win, and the rest will continue to assist within the party.

Poll

Who would you like to win the MLP leadership election?

  • George Abela
  • Evarist Bartolo
  • Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca
  • Michael Falzon
  • Joseph Muscat
