Updated: Appointments at the OPM

Josephine Vassallo has been appointed personal secretary to the Prime Minister after having served as press secretary for 18 months.

Her former post has been assumed by Gordon Pisani, whose official title is Head of Government Communications.

The Labour Party in a statement criticized Mr Pisani’s appointment.

It observed that whereas in the post-election mass meeting Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had promised to head a government for all the Maltese, he had now appointed as his press secretary the person who had been PN information director. Mr Pisani had been among those who helped Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando disrupt a televised press conference which was to have been given by Dr Sant before the election, the MLP said.

It all went to show that Dr Gonzi really had to be judged by his actions, and not what he said, the MLP commented.

I cannot understand all the fuss about Gordon Pisani's appointment, he is qualified, he is a serious person and he is intelligent. Perhaps labour what have preferred Charlon Gouder or Manwell Cuschieri for the position? I do not know, for myself and 98% of the Maltese we prefer Gordon.

Jason Micallef may have said it with reservations and was quickly taken to task even misenterpreted by the usual "soi-disant" independent press but the Nationalists are doing it without reservations and there is no uproar from the independent quarters. I am refering to the notorious Labour hater Gordon Pisani appointment.

And this is coming from the same people who said that their 'Gvern Laburista' would be only for the MLP people (Jason) and the ones who said that they already had MLP people ready to replace the people working for the government. (Silvio). Have you no shame?

Isn't it ridiculous to even try and fathom the secretary to the Prime Minister being a member of the opposing party?

It is so incongruous, even sad, that on the very day when all of Malta was paying homage to the late Sir Anthony Mamo, the non-partisan Maltese President much-loved as a unique symbol of national unity, our PM saw it fit to persist with his “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” political appointments by nominating his party’s Director of Information as the Government’s new Head of Communications. Surely there must be dozens of other qualified and less opinionated candidates in Malta who would have been much more appropriate for such a delicate post. Such appointments, even if they are totally deserved, foster even more disunity and strengthen the perception of at least half the Maltese population that this is a Government of the other half.

For heaven's sake boys, we're talking about the Prime Minister's PERSONAL SECRETARY. I'd like to see you employ your enemy to act as your right hand!

Let me remind you what Jason Micallef reportedly said before the elections.. "Gvern Laburista se jkun Gvern tal-laburisti."

So whatever you say.. it have been the same. Sour Grapes..At least Gonzi listened to the people and re shuffled his cabinet..

@Victor Laiviera - Give us an alternative to PN and we'll vote for them.. don't say MLP cause that's not an alternative.. (especially back then with Alfred Sant) .. MLP paroli fil-vojt biss.

The distinction between Government and Party becomes ever more blurred with every day the PN remains in power.
