Question: Who are the finest guitarists to emerge from the rock boom of the 1960s? Eric Clapton, no question, Brian May, definitely, George Harrison, arguably. But in there along with those illustrious names should also be the name of Gordon Giltrap.
Over the years Mr Giltrap has worked and collaborated with many great names, from rock musicians such as the afore-mentioned Brian May, Rick Wakeman and Midge Ure to jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, the classical guitarist Raymond Burley and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also played guitar alongside Cliff Richard, on stage in the West End musical Heathcliff.
Born and raised in Kent, in the southeast corner of England, Mr Giltrap began playing guitar at the age of nine.
A friend of his gave him an out-of-tune Spanish guitar.
Without a teacher to guide him, Mr Giltrap taught himself a hybrid technique of plectrum and little finger, but in doing so, created the individual sound that is still his trademark.
And now he is giving a concert in Malta and at our national theatre, no less. Gordon Giltrap is being brought over by Masquerade and his concert will be taking place next Tuesday at 7.30 p.m.
For his Malta concert he will be playing a selection of material taken from albums dating back to the 1960s. Mr Giltrap's guitar concert promises to be a unique event to be added to the growing list of memorable concerts by international musicians in Malta. This is our must-see for this month and should certainly attract a full house to the Manoel Theatre next Tuesday evening.
