Sir Anthony, the first President of Malta, died aged 99, early this morning.

He was born in Birkirkara and educated at the Archbishop’s seminary and the University of Malta where he graduated BA in 1931 and LLD in 1934. He was in private practice for a year before joining the civil service. He served as Crown Counsel from 1942 and became attorney general. He was appointed Chief Justice in 1957 and Governor-General in 1971 before becoming President in 1974.

Sir Anthony was a professor of criminal law at the University.

He was awarded the OBE in 1955 and knighted two years later. He was made Sieheb il-Gieh within the National Order of Merit in 1993.

The Department of Information said the Prime Minister had phoned Sir Anthony's family to convey his condolences. Sir Anthony is to be given a state funeral.

MLP acting leader Charles Mangion in a statement expressed the party's condolences, praising Sir Anthony for his intellect, integrity and professionalism.

PN general secretary Joe Saliba also expressed his condolences, saying Sir Anthony had given his all as Malta went through the process of becoming independent and then a republic. His passing away was a major loss for the country.

Sir Anthony abundantly proved that to be a great President you don't have to be a politician. Sir Anthony made us proud to be Maltese.

Needless to say, his legal sagacity will live on forever through his commentaries. This is a loss that will be strongly felt by the law student community.

This is indeed sad news.
Sir Anthony Mamo was a beacon of light shining through these uncertain days where politicians have become so greedy.

A President who serves FIRST OF ALL THE PEOPLE has to be be elected by the people. not by the Members of Parliament.
I think that it must be the time to declare the death of Malta's first Republic as it has been concoted to give a lot of advantage not to the citizens but to the elected few.

When are we going to learn, open our eyes and understand that we the people have the power not the smug politicians who take us for a five year ride.
Change the constitution so that we would have a better new republic solely aimed for the people.
Sir Anthony Mamo gave MALTA good and sterling service just like Dr.Anton Buttigieg and Ms Agatha Barbara and not forgetting Paul Xuereb.

What sad news. You were a great man sir - Your contribution to the legal field will never be forgotten by fellow law students. Requiescat In Pace
Angelo Micallef (on 1/5/08)
Sir Anthony Mamo's achievements span both in the political and legal field. In the legal world apart from being Chief Justice his studies have shaped Malta's legal studies and to this day he remains the biggest local authority on our criminal law. His political achievements include managing to unite our country behind his figure in times when political division was the order of the day. Sir Mamo's contribution to our nation should never be forgotten and our nation should show its gratitude in his funeral and by keeping his memory alive.
Albert Mockridge (on 1/5/08)

Pray for this country of our please from your deserved place in heaven.
May God Grant Him Eternal Rest.

There is a lot to say positively about Sir Anthony Mamo. May God give him eternal rest. Sir Anthony did a lot for our islands. Hope that we reflect that those were really the days; when the president of Malta was a person who had nothing to do with politics.
It is about time that we really have a President endorsed by all the people of Malta and Gozo, and not to just half of them.
So please PN and MLP it is your duty to remedy this situation throughout this new legislatures. No more french promotions please. It is about time that the people of Malta and Gozo elect our President who will have more power and authority to see that there is true accountability in the way national authorities and all are run. My dear varist i do not agree with your idea that the president should be the person enjoying supporter from two-thirds of the House of Representatives. The President belongs to the people and it should be our right to choose him.
We are fed up with the recurring farce of having former ministers and all being promoted as president of Malta...a nice way to tell them, move to the side, you are now only fit for symbolic ceremonies.
Malta and Gozo deserve a much stronger President. Hope that the sad loss of Sir Anthony Mamo will finally show us the way forward..... Sir Anthony thanks for truly being a gentleman and serving the best interest of our islands in the best way possible.
Joseph Grech-Attard (on 1/5/08)
Dear Anthony Mamo - rest in peace and please do pray God that the rulers and politcians of our country follow your integrity and see again the light of Morality and Ethics in their jobs. Thank you.

Sir Anthony Mamo is an inspiration to the Maltese Nation
M. Storace (on 1/5/08)
An honourable and great gentleman, humble, highly esteemed who served Malta with great loyality and was the President of all people. May he rest in peace.
Joe Spiteri Bailey (on 1/5/08)
Man of honour who was born in humility and died in humility. May God give him the eternal price due to him for several duties carried out to the best of his great abilities during his long and chequered lifetime.
David W Scicluna (on 1/5/08)
A man of honor who drove our small island into peace and unity in difficult times. We all should learn and follow his foot step. WE all say THANK YOU for the service you gave to our nation
Edric Micallef Figallo (on 1/5/08)
May this fine and distinguished gentleman and man of culture (the likes of whom our nation needs) rest in peace.

A distinguished jurist, plus a collaborator to four Maltese prime ministers being 2 from each of the current major parties, Sir Paul Boffa, Enrico Mizzi, Giorgio Borg Olivier and Dom Mintoff. May his dedication be an example for future generations, rather than some MTV pop idol teaching the youth all that they shouldn't learn.
Eileen Silvio (on 1/5/08)
We Lost A Really ''GREAT MAN'', MAY HE REST IN PEACE
D.M. Schembri (on 1/5/08)
Sir Anthony - You were truly an inspiration to others that hold the love for our country at heart.

We pray that the Almighty will welcome you as one of Malta's finest ambassadors
Christian Camenzuli (on 1/5/08)
A great gentleman who served his country with great loyalty.
A great man for a great country
Noel Cutajar (on 1/5/08)
History in the making...RIP. He was one the best jurist and lecturers in Criminal Law whose notes are still used today more than half a century later. It was an honour to have met him.
GEORGE MIFSUD (on 1/5/08)
Gone are the days when the President was first and a bi-partisan head of state, neutral and independent of any political party.
Alistair Facciol (on 1/5/08)
One of the greatest persons Malta has ever seen and surely an example for most of the practicing lawyers and future lawyers to be! May he rest in peace
David Agius (on 1/5/08)
May he indeed rest in peace. A man of honour who did his duty well and above its call.

Whilst honouring Sir Anthony let us not forget that it was a Labour Government headed by Dom Mintoff that elected him to that office. May the next President be a person who represents all of the people not just some.
Benjamin Pule` (on 1/5/08)
Definitely one of the best ever domestic legal experts. The fact that we still study Criminal Law from his own notes does say something about this person. May he rest in peace....
R. Schembri (on 1/5/08)
Sir Anthony Mamo will always be remembered as the first Maltese President and the only one who was non-partisan and respected by all the Maltese, whatever their political inclination. If only the next Maltese President would be just as sagacious, esteemed and perceived by all Maltese as a symbol of unity. May he rest in peace.
Albert Gauci Cunningham (on 1/5/08)
May Sir Anthony Mamo, who should become the symbol of Malta becoming a Republic, rest in peace and may we look back and be proud of his contribution to society....it is people like Sir Anthony Mamo that we should look up to and be proud of!! A big THANKYOU!!
