Diesel price rises again
The price of diesel will rise again as from tomorrow, according to a statement by Enemalta today. So too will the price of all other fuels except unleaded petrol and LRP.
The price of diesel at the beginning of April, for the first time, rose above that of unleaded petrol and drew protests from industry and trade unions. The past weeks have seen the international oil price reaching new records in the region of $115 per barrel.
The following will be the prices at the pump:

My understanding was that LHO is recommended for indoors heating precisely because it has very few emissions compared to other fuels. Then again I couldn't find any really authoritative sources to compare them.
I did find however that the fuels imported into Malta are not the cleanest available:

Perhaps we could start by sourcing some cleaner fuels for our pumps.
With this price increase it seems that diesel is now subsidising the other fuels. No surprises then that people will seek alternative ways of reducing their fuel expenditure.

Rumour has it that LHO is the preferred additive to Diesel and the pressure is mounting to do so with the higher prices.
It might be a reasonable idea to strongly colour LHO and then have frequent roadside inspections of Diesel running vehicles for using LHO/Diesel mix which should be (if it is not already) illegal to use as it is (I beleive) a very heavy polutant. Our health and the health of our children is being put at risk by those trying to save a few cents.
As an incentive not to use LHO, vehicles found to be using LHO/Diesel mix should be forbidden to continue their journey - towed to a garage, have all fuel drained and then the vehicle tank should be totally filled up with clean Diesel AT THE DRIVERS IMMEDIATE EXPENSE - no pay, no vehicle until paid.
