Last week my sister was witness to a disgusting scene. The story goes like this:

She was on her way to the Valletta market and when she reached the Palace arch on Old Theatre Street (near the flower seller's kiosk), one of the Monti hawkers was reversing his van across the street.

Instead of going about it in a decent, slow pace, he put his foot down hard on the accelerator and nearly put under a group of six tourists.

One of the group spoke to the driver and pointed out the danger he had put them all in. The result: a tirade of abusive words, shouting and rude gestures. What a way to treat our tourists! What a way to let them feel our traditional hospitality.

A solution against a repeat performance? Either strict and constant police control... or chuck the Monti hawkers out of Valletta!
