It is bad enough when irrespons-ible drivers create havoc by "throwing" their vehicles in all directions and endangering others, but the chagrin is much worse when the problem is created by our so-called "traffic experts".

The pictured sign at Msida, opposite the Workers' Monument, is a case in point. Years ago it showed that the right lane should be used only by motorists wishing to head back to Pietà and Valletta, with anyone headed for Sliema taking the first traffic light in the other lane marked Sliema. That's the way things should be again, so that we no longer have traffic from the right trying to cross two lanes of mainstream traffic at the bottom of Rue d'Argens.

I have personally seen scores of such near misses, and no doubt many others have seen them too. But it is doubtful whether the police at Msida, in full view of all the mayhem, have ever bothered to speak to the traffic authorities about it. I never see any of them looking out!
