I refer to Vladmir Forte's letter (April 18) about the problems he experienced with a group of Africans in Buġibba who appeared to be harassing a lady.

This problem, which, in my experience, is caused by the recent influx of immigrants, will get very much worse very quickly if the UK experience is anything to go by.

One has to remember that these are not the gentle Maltese, but people who, because they come from a less fortunate background, wish to share some of the alleged wealth of western countries.

Sadly this seems to mean that they are bringing some of their "traditions" with them. This appears to include gathering in groups, presumably for company and their perceived "security".

What is actually happening though is that when you get a group of men without women, more primitive urges take over and this then puts locals at risk. Then, as in the UK, it will not be safe to walk in many areas at night, or in fact, in some areas during the day.

I have experienced these groups in the Sliema/Gżira area each morning as they waited to pick up casual work. I believe that this activity is not legal in Malta as they hide their work clothes between parked cars. It is obvious why they are there but, as usual in Malta, no action is taken, and the authorities seem to turn a blind eye.

This brings me to my final point. The other day a correspondent decried the treatment of illegal immigrants landing in Malta. I say, think again. Look at the UK (which used to be called Great Britain) where I cannot walk any distance without hearing foreign voices, but where my government thinks this is OK. The residents though, do not. We are being overrun and have every sympathy with Malta as I can see this happening in Malta too.
