A stunning goal from Paul Scholes gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday to set up an all-English Champions League final against either Liverpool or Chelsea in Moscow next month.

Scholes sent a swerving shot high and wide of goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the 14th minute of the semi-final, second leg at Old Trafford to give United a 1-0 aggregate victory.

"(He's) one of our great players. He came through the ranks and he knows about this club. I'm so pleased for everyone," United manager Alex Ferguson told ITV television.

"It was marvellous, this club deserves to be in the final, for the history and the support. Fantastic."

Barcelona, and especially their Argentine winger Lionel Messi, played some outstanding attacking football but were thwarted time and again by brilliant defending from United's back line.

"They had to gamble and the fans got us over the line," Ferguson said. It will be United's third European Cup final following their earlier successes in 1968 and 1999.
