Families file protest over pig farm

Two families living in Maghtab have filed a judicial protest claiming that a Mepa permit granted for a pig fattening farm behind their properties is illegal.

John and Geraldine Portelli together with Marco and Sandra Borg filed the protest in the First Hall of the Civil Court.

The application for the pig farm was approved on April 10. The fattening facility will house 80 pigs. The area already includes a number of farms.

The families in the protest are claiming that the application and its justification were decided in an arbitrary fashion. They said the farm will pose a serious health threat to the public, cause them to suffer material losses by making their homes uninhabitable, and they will lose their right to enjoy their homes.

They called for the development application to be reconsidered.

Lawyer Tanya Sciberras Camilleri signed the protest.
