A man from Floriana was yesterday remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to trying to steal €233 (Lm100) from a car.

Magistrate Silvio Meli heard Joseph Zammit, 49, plead not guilty to trying to steal from a Fiat Panda last Sunday.

He also pleaded not guilty to relapsing.

The court took Mr Zammit's criminal record into account and ruled that it was evident that he had a "serious problem" and recommended that he attend a drug rehabilitation programme while in prison.

Police Inspector Alfred Mallia prosecuted.

Lawyer David Farrugia Sacco was defence counsel.
