Packaging waste collection
In reply to Peter Murray's letter Separating Truth From Trash (April 25), I would like clarify a few points. First of all in respect of the recyclable bags these have been in hand for a number of weeks and have been stored at the ministry until an agreement has been reached with all the parties.
To say that the local councils and waste collectors had no idea about the packaging waste system is also unfair as the Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs has been in negotiations with the Local Councils Association and the GRTU, who represent the waste collectors, for the past nine months. Regarding the date of commencement, the ministry in the coming days will be sending information to all households about when they can collect the recyclable bags and when the collection of packaging waste will commence in their locality.
I trust that, when the scheme starts, Mr Murray will continue to do his part as he ably did on the media.

Families living in Ta'Xbiex have received a circular letter from the Local Council informing them that separated waste is to start to be collected on the 6 May 2008. It advised that the relative bags could be collected as from the 28 April, 2008 from the Council office.
Calling at the Local Council Office on the 28 April the clerk in charge asked for the never mentioned " Government coupon!!."
It results that families have first to receive some sort of coupons from the Government to be able to collect the relative bags.
Does this prove that the Local Councils have been duly briefed but that the authority concerned could not careless.
A good example of coordination!
