Saints hammer Senglea

St Patrick boosted their chances of staying up after beating Senglea 4-0 .

St Patrick registered their first win in six games and are now level on 13 points with Mellieħa, leaving Marsa alone at the bottom of the table, three points behind. The Saints' last win goes back to February 10.

Winston Muscat's side were in desperate need of points following a 2-2 draw against Mellieħa in their last match. With Senglea only interested in honouring the fixture, St Patrick found little difficulty to see off Richard Mercieca's team.

St Patrick had Thomas Caruana in superb form as he led his team's attacking charge. The Saints started the game as the better side and after seven minutes Haruna Doda's fierce drive whizzed past the crossbar.

After 12 minutes St Patrick took the lead thanks to a penalty converted by Caruana after the referee ruled that Simon Aquilina had handled the ball inside his own box - a dubious call indeed.

On 22 minutes the Saints made it 2-0 when Sean Magro headed home a Caruana centre. Six minutes later it was practically all over as Karl Vassallo headed the ball home from a Magro delivery into the Senglea box.

St Patrick rounded the score to 4-0 four minutes after the restart. From a poor clearance, the ball came into the path of Magro whose grounder gave the Senglea goalkeeper no chance.

On 62 minutes Vassallo was denied by the Senglea bar after he was put through by Caruana. St Patrick held control of the proceedings with ease to secure the points. Their attention is now centred on the decisive match against Marsa, to be played on May 10.
