Cleared of forgery charges

A 24-year-old man was cleared of forging a cheque after a court ruled there was not enough evidence to incriminate him.

Darren Degabriele of Għaxaq was accused of forging the signature of his business partner onto a cheque and receiving €1,770.80 (Lm760) in cash from the transaction made in May 2003.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Giovanni Grixti, took into consideration the fact that the prosecution did not prove that the cheque was signed by Mr Degabriele, and therefore acquitted him.

Police Inspector Nadia Lanzon prosecuted.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Charmaine Cherrett were defence counsel.
