I refer to the letter titled Mqabba Lily Fireworks Wins Floriana Festival, by Marvin Sciberras in his capacity as public relations officer of Soċjeta' Mużikali Madonna tal-Ġilju - Mqabba (April 14).

In my capacity as chairman of the Malta Mechanised Ground Fireworks Festival, held on the Granaries in Floriana on April 5, while extending warm congratulations to the Mqabba Lily Fireworks Factory (this year's overall winner), I feel a word of appreciation should go to all participants for another truly unique display of pyrotechnics.

The societies taking part were the following: St Joseph Fireworks Factory - Għaxaq; St Leonard Fireworks Factory - Kirkop; St Paul Fireworks Factory - Safi; St George's Fireworks Factory - Qormi; Sacred Family Fireworks Association - Kalkara; Our Lady of Consolation Fireworks Factory - Gudja; 22 February Fireworks Association - Birżebbuġa; St Mary Fireworks Factory - Għaxaq; Lily Fireworks Factory - Mqabba; Victory Band Club Fireworks Association - Naxxar; La Stella Fireworks Factory - Gudja; St Mary Fireworks Factory - Mosta; 26 July Fireworks Factory - Sta Venera; St Joseph Fireworks Factory - Żebbuġ, Malta; Our Lady of Doctrine Fireworks Association - Tarxien and the 15 August Fireworks Factory - Mosta.

The Floriana local council thanks all those who contributed to rendering this year's edition of the Malta Mechanised Ground Fireworks Festival a resounding success, not forgetting all those thousands who flocked to the Granaries in order to witness what turned out to be an artistic/cultural display, making this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In his letter, Mr Sciberras referred to the jury, mentioning British design engineer Willie Wicking who, a couple of days after the festival, told me that even though he toured the globe in his capacity as expert, he had never yet seen anything which could even begin to match the mechanised ground fireworks offered by Maltese associations on that day.

The Floriana council sends its regards to the St Catherine Fireworks Factory (Żurrieq), which had to opt out of the competition due to the tragedy that hit two of its members on November 15, last year.
