Young enthusiasts experience seafaring in Skolasport courses

Skolasport, organised by the Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport and sponsored by Kellogg's, holds sailing courses both at the Birzebbuga Sailing Club and Vikings Sailing Club in Valletta. Sessions for young hopefuls, aged 11 to 16 years, are held weekly.

The initial stages of the course focus on the identification of boat parts, rigging and launching, the use of proper clothing and safety measures. Sessions progress with knowledge of wind direction, orientation and balance of boat.

The main aim is to enjoy sailing as a sports activity for its own sake but those who show aptitude and ability are encouraged to acquire their own boat and are eventually also given private tuition.
