PM justifies council dissolution

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has informed the president of the Local Councils' Association that his decision to dissolve the Mtarfa local council was in line with the speech he made when he was sworn in as Prime Minister, during which he said that he expected accountability and seriousness from those around him.

In a letter addressed to association president Michael Cohen, Dr Gonzi noted that the local council in question had not been carrying out its duty. The council members had last met in November and had failed to appoint an executive secretary.

The letter was sent in response to a letter in which Mr Cohen expressed his concern at the manner in which Dr Gonzi decided that the Mtarfa council should be dissolved without consulting the association.

Well done Prime Minister ... The Local Councils Association knew for months about the problem and either did nothing about it or did not manage to find a solution. How can a locality be democratically managed by a council that does not meet for 1/6 of its term?

Let us get serious and make this country a better place for all of us and our children to live in.
