Healthy schools

Officials from the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention were invited to give talks to parents of children attending Żejtun Primary A. Brian Craus, head of the school, expressed the need for further dialogue with parents on various health issues within the school setting.

During one of these sessions, Petra Mallia, public health nutritionist at the department, gave an excellent presentation on healthy eating. The parents responded with interest and asked questions throughout the session.

Marianne Massa, principal health promotion officer at the department, presented the school with a voucher sponsored by Tip Top Ltd, exchangeable for sports and physical activity equipment for the children.

Ms Massa explained that there was a need to focus on more physical activity for children, both during and after school hours, and encouraged parents to be innovative in rewarding their children and to find alternatives to sweets or chocolates.

Anyone requiring further information on promoting health in schools may contact Marianne Massa on 2326 6113 or through e-mail maryanne.massa@gov.mt.
