Britta Steffen broke her own European record by clocking 53.20 seconds for the 100 metres freestyle at the German championships in Berlin earlier this week.

Steffen, whose old world record of 53.30 was smashed when Australia's Lisbeth Trickett swam 52.88 last month, has been criticised for opting out of the 200 metres at the August Olympics.

"I think this was the right answer to the critics," she told reporters.
