The last week of the regular season from the National League ended on a positive note for Gozo Tornadoes. They beat reigning champions Mellieha Northenders 12-5 in just seven innings.

Gozo scored four runs in their first five plate appearances in the opening innings, thanks to consecutive singles of Rodney Debono, Gary DeBrincat and Charlie Attard.

Northenders replied in the bottom of the third innings with one run and another in the bottom of the fourth. After a decisive error by Gozo's defence, Mellieha rallied in the fifth and tied the game off reliever Steven Galea.

Gozo fought back in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs off reliever Clint Grima and then scoring the 12th run in the top of the seventh to win the game.

Galea did a superb job by throwing two scoreless innings, dashing any hope left for the Northenders to make a comeback.

On Sunday, Tornadoes face Mustangs in the first match from the play-off season.
