A man was yesterday charged with stealing two cars and driving without a licence.

Anthony Abela, 37, of Qormi, pleaded not guilty to stealing a Hillman at midnight on February 20 from Qormi and a Ford Fiesta at 7 a.m. from Marsa on February 27.

He also pleaded not guilty to handling stolen property, driving without a licence and breaching the conditions of a previous release.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €2,000 (Lm858.36).

The court heard how he is currently receiving methadone treatment from the Detox Centre, and lives off government assistance.

Lawyer Richard Sladden appeared as legal aid to Mr Abela. Police Inspectors Elton Taliana and Anna Marie Micallef prosecuted.
