Centre-left Rome Mayoral candidate Francesco Rutelli visited injured AS Roma captain Francesco Totti at a hospital in Rome yesterday.

Totti could miss the start of the next Serie A season after undergoing a knee operation, the club doctor said last weekend.

The 31-year-old, plagued by niggles all season, suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Roma's 1-1 Serie A draw with Livorno on Saturday.

Totti, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, has retired from international football so would have missed Euro 2008 in any case.
