The draw for the last edition of the Intertoto Cup, held yesterday at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, pitted Malta's representative against a team from Slovenia.
The first round of the competition, over two legs, will be played on June 21/22 and June 28/29.
Malta's spot in the Intertoto Cup is usually taken up by the third- or fourth-placed team in the final Premier League table but this season, the situation is more complicated after Sliema Wanderers, currently fourth in the standings, did not apply to take part.
Floriana also appear to be out of the reckoning due to their late application for a UEFA licence and there is also uncertainty about Hamrun's eligibility in UEFA competitions next season.
The winner of the tie involving the Maltese team will meet Bulgarian opponents in the second round.
Last year, Birkirkara faced a Slovenian side in the Intertoto Cup. NK Maribor beat the Stripes 5-1 on aggregate.
Having been designated as a UEFA Cup qualifier in 1995, the revamp of the continental club competitions from 2009/10 will signal the end of the summer Intertoto Cup.
