Christopher Ciantar has been appointed Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs.

Dr Ciantar joined the Ministry for the Environment in 1994 as an engineer in the Building and Engineering Department having obtained a BEng (Hons) in mechanical engineering from the University of Malta.

In 1996 he read for an MSc in Building Services Engineering from Brunel University (UK). He obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy from Bournemouth University (UK) in 2001.

Dr Ciantar was appointed head of the Waste Management and Sustainable Initiatives Unit in the same year and strategy and development executive of WasteServ Malta Ltd in 2003.

In 2005 he was appointed director (environment policy and initiatives) in the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment.

Dr Ciantar is married to Eleonor née Vassallo.
