Charged with defiling girl aged six

A 56-year-old man was yesterday charged with regularly defiling a young girl.

Joseph Vassallo of Birkirkara pleaded not guilty to defiling the girl in 2006 and 2007 when she was between six and eight years of age.

He also filed a not-guilty plea to holding her against her will, committing a violent act against her and offending public morals in Marsascala.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani heard the case behind closed doors.

Police Inspector Raymond Aquilina prosecuted. Lawyer Noel Camilleri represented Mr Vassallo while lawyer Joe Mifsud appeared in parte civile.

Despite being charged - not convicted - this man's name has been published. Why two weights and two measures? Likewise, the name of the 37-year-old private school religion teacher ADMITTING TO AND BEING FOUND GUILTY OF defiling two of his pupils should have been made public. The fact that his name was banned by the court from being published simply to protect the privacy of his pupils is a paultry excuse, and only serves to protect the private school (where the man now longer teaches) and the pervert himself.
