Nature Trust Malta has called on the authorities to implement a national strategy on clean energy products without further delay.

In a message to mark Earth Day 2008, today, NTM said that despite Malta being one of the first countries to bring up the issue of climate change at the UN, it has now fallen behind in the implementation of measures.

EU countries are already moving to meet the targets set by the EU - Malta on the other hand still does not have a national strategy on the use of renewable energy and so far only small incentives have been given to citizens by the authorities.

NTM said transport still remains the main pollutant followed by the fossil fuel energy stations - Delimara and Marsa.

The authorities must do their best to upgrade public transport, ensure that less polluting cars are imported, give incentives on cleaner fuel and seriously take up renewable energy as an alternative, it said.
