The Times granted precious space to Joseph Vella from California (Symbol of Repression, April 18) to "respectfully" hurt most Maltese by his disagreement with the related article on the George Cross and by his blatant pouring of "shame on all Maltese who..." differ from his view. What kind of respect is this?

I absolutely disagree with Mr Vella's rendition of the British period in Malta as totally regretful, subordinate, repressive and for the greater benefit of the Empire. Has Mr Vella ever stopped to ponder what other awful avenues awaited Malta were it not for the British?

I'm sure his "painful memories" would have been of a greater degree. Of course life was harsh then but perhaps Mr Vella wishes to explain or fantasise how life could have been nicer according to his "what could have been".

To counter Mr Vella and with the same "respect", may I confirm my pride in the George Cross, in the direct participation of my late father in World War II in the Royal Navy and of all those Maltese and foreigners (including British) who dedicated their lives so that Mr Vella and myself could today be where we are. I urge other readers to unashamedly write in their comments too.
