Two injured in National Road accident

A man and a woman were seriously injured when their car crashed into a tree at National Road near Portes des Bombes in Floriana.

The police said a Hyundai Accent driven by an 18-year-old from Zurrieq went out of control and crashed into a tree. The man and a 17-year-old girl from Luqa, who was a passenger, were both rushed to hospital and found to have suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The car was extensively damaged.

First of all, I wish the two teenagers a speedy and complete recovery. You can have the best engineered roads and the best cars on the road, the fact remains that teenage and young male drivers are involved in more traffic accidents than other drivers, not just in Malta but in other countries.

It simply remains, a matter of discipline and disciplining. Malta is rampnat with indisciplined individuals having no regard for regulations. We also have enforcement agencies, etc... who are brilliant to book petty benders, rather then enforce serious matters. It turns out to be again mis management, and also laziness. If all agencies and enforcement officers start to love their job for what it is maybe Malta would be a better place.

I agree , with the two previous comments. Having read a previous article about the 2000, plus new vehicles, on the road, since the turn of the year. Have the roads been updated to carry all these extra vehicles, albeit some may have been taken off the road. But mainly there would have been an increase, because or the introduction of the Euro. Buying a car is better value than putting monies into Banks. Back to the driving. Ignorance is bliss, so the saying goes.

With due respect to Ray Attard-Previ I beg to differ. Having lived and driven on the European Continent for the past 40 years it is the Maltese people who need to be taught how to drive properly.

They have no respect for the highway code, for other drivers or the condition of the roads. They drive as if they are the only people on the road, they do not bother using indicators, they drive one handed with either their arm flopping by the side of the car or on their mobile phones. Children running riot on the back seat, not strapped in, and driving with a dog or even a child on their lap.

They have no patience or respect for other road users, overtaking as and when they feel like it, joining major roads without bothering to even look and see if any cars are already using it and of course stopping on any road when they see a friend they need to talk to.

No wonder there are all these fatal or near fatal accidents, it's a miracle there aren't more.

Roundabouts, what are roundabouts for, just an extension of a parking area.

And whilst this is all going on where are our Loacal Wardens or Police Force. Who knows, certainly never to be seen pulling in drivers for breaking the law or dangerous driving.

But then people tell me this is Malta what do you expect !

The ongoing sad episodes of road accidents should prompt the authorities to focus on road sense and better management. The local road network clearly is partly to blame with the ever increasing number of road users.
